Music pauses to "verify" me in browser and does not resume

Does anyone know why CAPTCHA or human identification checks on your MacBook while browsing would pause the music playing on your phone.

I am asking this here because a quick search hasn't really returned anything concrete to stop it from happening. I may look like a bot sometimes, but I am a human I swear!

I have confirmed this is a hand off issue. Looks like any request for audio playback or audio routing (even muted audio or CAPTCHA audio verification that isn't auto-launched) causes the Mac to trigger a "control request" to my AirPod Max 2s that are connected to both my iPhone and my MacBook.

Turning off hand off appears to be the only solution, but I wish this were handled better across the entire ecosystem.

Turn off audio handoff/routing between devices

    • On iPhone: Settings → AirPlay & Handoff → disable Handoff
    • On Mac: System Settings → General → AirDrop & Handoff → disable Handoff

Force the Mac to use only local speakers

    • On Mac, open Control Center (sound) and switch output to your Mac speakers/headphones, not your iPhone.
