Lock screen clock jerks for about a second

Device: iPhone 16 pro Max

Problem: On my iPhone 16 Pro Max, whenever I press the power button to turn off the screen, the lock screen clock jerks for about a second.

This is Hardware/Display Problem or Software iOS issue?

Please help me understand this issue and how to solve it.

Thank you.

This is most likely a software/animation rendering issue rather than a hardware defect. Here is a breakdown and steps to fix it:

Why it happens:

When you press the power button to lock the iPhone, iOS animates the lock screen transition. On some devices, a brief rendering glitch or animation stutter can cause the clock to "jerk" for a split second. This is commonly a software-level issue tied to iOS rendering.

Steps to resolve:

1. Reduce Motion (quickest fix):

- Go to Settings > Accessibility > Motion

- Turn ON "Reduce Motion"

- This disables parallax and certain animations that may cause the jerk

2. Check iOS version:

- Go to Settings > General > Software Update

- Install any available update, as such rendering bugs are often patched

3. Reset all settings (does not erase data):

- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings

- This resets display and animation settings to defaults without wiping your data

4. Force restart:

- Quickly press and release Volume Up, then Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears

- This clears temporary memory that may be causing the glitch

5. Check for app conflicts:

- If you have any lock screen widgets or Live Activities running, try removing them temporarily to see if the jerk stops

This is almost certainly a software issue. If all steps above fail, it would be worth booking a Genius Bar appointment to confirm no display hardware issue.

Try a "forced" restart of your device using these instructions: Put it on charge for at least half an hour, then, keeping it plugged in, use these gestures:

In rapid sequence, press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the side (power) button. Only when the Apple logo appears (it might take 10-20 seconds), release that button (ignore all other screens that might appear, the one with the "slider" to turn the device off included).

If the issue still persists, I suggest that you contact Apple Support directly, using this link:--> Contact Apple for support and service

Expressing or conveying visual experiences effectively through these forums may be challenging. The underlying visual issue on your iPhone cannot be accurately diagnosed online. Factors such as your iPhone's specific settings, visual defects, and potential hardware problems cannot be assessed through this method. For more personalized and in-depth assistance, I recommend securing a Genius Bar Reservation and exploring the various support options provided by Apple.

Get a Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options - Apple

When you encounter issues with your Apple devices, the Genius Bar at Apple Retail Stores is the go-to place for expert assistance. The Genius Bar is staffed by knowledgeable Apple employees, often referred to as "Geniuses," who can diagnose and resolve a wide range of hardware and software-related problems. To ensure personalized attention and a convenient visit, Apple provides the option to schedule a Genius Bar Reservation.

Contact Genius Bar.

Manage Reservations - My Reservations - Apple

Take your device to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider, or contact Apple Support:

  1. If you prefer face-to-face assistance, you can visit an Apple Retail Store. Apple Retail Stores are designed to provide a hands-on experience with Apple products and offer support services. You can speak with Apple specialists, known as "Creative Pros" in some locations, who can assist you with product-related inquiries or minor troubleshooting.
  2. In addition to Apple Retail Stores, there are Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASPs) that are authorized to perform repairs on Apple products. AASPs are independent businesses certified by Apple to offer service and repairs for various Apple devices.
  3. If visiting a physical location is not possible or convenient, you can seek support by contacting Apple Support. Apple offers various channels for support, including phone support, live chat, and email. The official Apple Support website provides information on how to reach out to Apple for assistance.

Finally, you can also start a repair log or track the status of existing repair --> Apple Repair and Repair Status Check - Official Apple Support

In summary, Apple provides customers with a range of support options, including the Genius Bar Reservation system, visits to Apple Retail Stores or Authorized Service Providers, and various channels to contact Apple Support for assistance with their products. These services aim to ensure that Apple users receive the necessary help and support whenever they encounter issues with their devices.

Hi shadhin240,

Well, unfortunately we (just users like you) don't have tools to run remote diagnostics.

To be honest, I also think it could be a RAM management issue or a lack of space on your iPhone (perhaps due to some apps using it up in the background).

The only other thing I can think of is some accessibility feature for managing the power button (check those settings).

But, as already suggested, I think contacting Apple Support directly is the best course of action.

Please keep me informed.

Thanks and regards

Giulio

Hi Giulio,

Thank you so much for your kind reply.

While a force restart temporarily resolves the issue, the problem consistently recurs every 5 to 6 days. Given that a reboot provides a temporary fix before the system degrades again, this strongly points toward a software bug, potentially a memory leak or a background process accumulation issue. Could you please investigate further?
