How do I log in as a "Registered User" to my Mac Studio file share from my laptop?
When I try my instructions are ignored and it logs me as my apple account instead. As a result time machine doesn't work because it is not possible to give time machine permissions to an apple account.
How do you get the machine to do what you ask it to do?
The dialog box is clear - the middle choice is "Registered User". Choosing this option in my case causes the third option apple account to be chosen, which shows up clearly in the Finder as having logged in with my apple ID email address, not my local account username.
Click the disconnect button, then connect As…
It really wants you to use your currently logged in credentials. No idea why. it doesn’t seem to matter which option you choose. If you disconnect and then connect as…, it should work.

Yes, as I told you on your Time Machine question.
It's not asking for your Apple ID and Password. It's asking for the username and password you set up for the server.
registered user == a user account setup on the computer
this is the default way to login to a computer
guest is minimal rights access account for well people who visit you and you for whatever reason let them use your computer
so it all comes down to what the user name you gave your computer and what password you set for that account , if you type in those 2 things bobs your uncle.

I can enter any bogus password for the registered user I like, it will be ignored and succeed as I'm logged into the apple account instead.
