i cannot update my apple ap when i select the one update needed in red it takes me to a page that says continue with a link that does not open anything. So in settings i have this red alert i cannot clear.

It may help to provide screenshots of what you are seeing as long as they do not reveal personal information such are your Apple Account email address.
If you have a VPN, remove it as some are known to cause problems connecting to Apple Servers. In most cases, turning it off will not help and it has to be uninstalled.
