This is very likely related to a known issue where macOS Tahoe (26.x) updated Photos and changed how albums/folders sync between iCloud and local organization. Your photos are safe — the organization structure may have been affected by a Photos library re-sync.
Here's what to try to recover your albums:
Step 1: Check the Recently Deleted and Hidden albums
- In Photos > Albums sidebar, scroll down and check "Recently Deleted"
- Also check "Hidden" album to see if anything moved there accidentally
Step 2: Check if this is an iCloud sync issue
- Go to System Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Photos
- Toggle "Sync this Mac" off, wait 30 seconds, then toggle back on
- This forces a fresh sync with iCloud and may restore the album structure
Step 3: Check Photos library integrity
- Quit Photos
- Hold Option+Command and open Photos — this opens the library repair tool
- Click "Repair Library" and let it complete
- This rebuilds the Photos library database and can restore missing albums/folders
Step 4: Check for a different Photos library
- In Photos > Preferences (or Settings) > General, check which library is currently selected
- Sometimes a macOS update can switch to a different library
- Make sure "System Photo Library" is the one you've been using
Step 5: Restore from Time Machine
If you have Time Machine backups:
- Close Photos
- Open Time Machine, navigate back 2-3 days to when albums were still there
- Restore the Photos Library file from ~/Pictures/ folder
IMPORTANT: Do not let Photos re-sync or re-organize your library until you've tried the repair steps, as that could overwrite the album structure with the current (incorrect) state from iCloud.
