Photos albums and folders disappeared on MacBook

On my Macbook photos all my albums and folders (they were all there 2 days ago) neatly organized have disappeared. The photos are there but no longer in the folders that took forever to organize. There are a few albums from my iphone but thats it.

I ensured icloud and sync are on. I have tried repairing photos, went to icloud photos and it is the same issue. Very frustrating as this was done over the past 10 years and to start over would be a nightmare.

Any suggestions? Thank you for your time.

This is very likely related to a known issue where macOS Tahoe (26.x) updated Photos and changed how albums/folders sync between iCloud and local organization. Your photos are safe — the organization structure may have been affected by a Photos library re-sync.

Here's what to try to recover your albums:

Step 1: Check the Recently Deleted and Hidden albums

- In Photos > Albums sidebar, scroll down and check "Recently Deleted"

- Also check "Hidden" album to see if anything moved there accidentally

Step 2: Check if this is an iCloud sync issue

- Go to System Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Photos

- Toggle "Sync this Mac" off, wait 30 seconds, then toggle back on

- This forces a fresh sync with iCloud and may restore the album structure

Step 3: Check Photos library integrity

- Quit Photos

- Hold Option+Command and open Photos — this opens the library repair tool

- Click "Repair Library" and let it complete

- This rebuilds the Photos library database and can restore missing albums/folders

Step 4: Check for a different Photos library

- In Photos > Preferences (or Settings) > General, check which library is currently selected

- Sometimes a macOS update can switch to a different library

- Make sure "System Photo Library" is the one you've been using

Step 5: Restore from Time Machine

If you have Time Machine backups:

- Close Photos

- Open Time Machine, navigate back 2-3 days to when albums were still there

- Restore the Photos Library file from ~/Pictures/ folder

IMPORTANT: Do not let Photos re-sync or re-organize your library until you've tried the repair steps, as that could overwrite the album structure with the current (incorrect) state from iCloud.

Wow--this has not happened to me-- it sounds awful! Could you give us some information?

  • Where does your Mac's Photos Library reside-- in the Pictures folder of your internal drive, or on an external drive? or on a network? on iCloud drive?
  • Do you use Optimized Storage?
  • What is your storage at iCloud.com? At System Settings>[name]>icloud>Storage , my Mac says 176 GB of 200 GB used. What does yours say?
  • What is your storage on this Mac? At System Settings>General> Storage, my Mac says 745 GB of 1TBB used. What does yours say?

Of course, the best idea is to restore from a backup that you have. Time Machine backups are great. You and I both have MacBooks, so we can't keep an external drive connected all the time, but I try to plug in my Time Machine drive at least once a day, and then it automatically does an incremental backup. Time Machine lets us go back a day or a month or a year or more to see our files as they were in the past.

I also periodically drag a copy of my Photos Library to a separate external drive. I've had drives go belly up, and I count on having more than one backup.

iCloud Photos is great for sharing pictures among devices, but it just isn't much of a backup, since it changes almost instantaneously. A good back up should let you go "back up" through your old versions.

Could you elaborate bit, please? What do you mean by "The photos are there but no longer in the folders that took forever to organize. "? Are you being all photos in the "All Photos" view, but most albums and folders are missing? Or are the albums empty?

What kind of albums did you create? Standard albums, smart albums, or Shared albums?

If your albums are missing, you ma want to check the sidebar in Photos on your Mac, if you have hidden the albums.

  • To the right of the heading "Albums" in the sidebar is a hidden disclosure triangle, that will only appear, when you hover the pointer to the right of the text "Albums".
  • each folder has a separate disclosure triangle.
  • You may also want to check, if the filters are cleared. The filters should be set to "All items". See: Filter your photo library to show specific items on Mac - Apple Support

BTW, I had it occasionally happen, that my albums vanished, but only on older system versions, like macOS 10.14 Mojave. When I enabled iCloud Photos on an iPad or iPhone with an older system version, it could cause the albums on Mac to vanish. They returned after a month or so in Photos for Mac, but at that time I had recreated all albums and folders.

If you just enabled iCloud Photos on an additional device, you may want to wait, if your albums and folders will return.
