iPhone keeps making FaceTime audio calls instead of regular phone calls when I click on a contact's number

why is my phone trying to start a facetime audio call when I hit the phone icon button? lately, I've been going to my iphone and into "Contacts". and then under someone's contact card it'll list their phone number. So I'll click the phone number ( and it has an icon of a phone next to it). And then my phone will say its calling with "Facetime audio" but i didnt click facetime audio. Why is it not making a normal phone call when I click on their number? So then I click on the round circle icon of the phone and same thing. Do i have some kind of setting enabled to do facetime audio instead? How do i fix this?
