Learning iPad buttons and terminology as a new user
New to iPad, trying to learn what the buttons do and some terminology. Such as “dock” means the row of app icons at bottom of the screen.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

The iPad User Guide is a rich and often overlooked source of information about your iPad and iPadOS. Here you will find comprehensive explanations of the various elements of your iPad (such as the physical buttons) and native installed software:
iPad User Guide - Apple Support
The Tips App, installed by default on all new models of iPad, provides a brief introduction - and leads you to the User Guide. In case you missed it, here is a link to the Tips App:
I agree with LotusPilot about reading the user guide and viewing the Tips in the Tip App. I've been using iPads for quite a few years. But each time I buy a new one, I find it worthwhile to read the user guide again. So much information in there! Even us "old dogs" can learn new tricks. And it never hurts to review what is there in case we forget.
Have fun with the new iPad! And if you have specific questions, come back a let us know. We'd be happy to help.
The User Guide is your friend. click here ➜ iPad models compatible with iPadOS 26 - Apple Support
Then click on your specific model of iPad there for a break down of buttons and exterior features of your specific model.
As far as buttons go, there's only 3. The Sleep/power button and the volume up and down buttons.
Function is pretty self explanatory. Though on some models of iPad the Sleep/power button is also the Touch ID sensor.
You're very welcome.
Should you need further help or guidance, or simply need to clarify something from the User Guide, please don't hesitate to return. The User Guide is just the start of your journey. As you learn through using the iPad, you'll discover features and capabilities that aren't fully documented - and this is where the experience of our seasoned contributors will no doubt be useful.
Have fun with your iPad. It's more powerful and capable than you might think...
Thanks to all who responded. Thanks for the encouragement, tips, and especially the links to the user guides.
Carol B., I am an “old dog” just not in the iPad world. Greatly appreciate all the help.
