MacBook Pro: Japanese Romaji keyboard layout issue

I just want to type in Japanese on my Macbook Pro (2021) and for some reason I just cannot get the standard QWERTY keyboard input. I'm very used to typing in Japanese on my old PC, and even my old Macbook, so I don't understand what happened. I've attached a screenshot of the Romaji keyboard it's giving me (like why is there a Z where Y is in QWERTY?), and it's just frustrating because where I want to use the long dash - it just has a beta symbol? I've been googling this for a while and can't find any answers besides "Tick the Romaji keyboard and not the Kana keyboard". This IS the Romaji keyboard it's giving me.

My usual keyboard is set to Australian (I live in New Zealand) and it's just normal QWERTY.

Would really appreciate some help!!

Go to the settings for Japanese Romaji and look for the item called Romaji Layout and switch that from German/qwertz to Australian or US or ABC.

Are you able to upgrade to Sequoia?

Try adding US to your input sources and then make Romaji active in the input menu in the top right of the screen and then click on that and go to the very bottom and select Open Japanese - Romaji settings and see if any change.

Also you can try a safe boot, which sometimes fixes glitches like this:

Hi,

To fix a MacBook Pro Japanese Romaji keyboard layout issue, you need to ensure the correct "Japanese - Romaji" layout is added and activated in your Apple Support settings. This will let you type the English alphabet and have it automatically convert to hiragana.

How to add and configure "Japanese - Romaji"

  1. Navigate to the Apple menu (top-left) and open System Settings.
  2. Scroll down and click on Keyboard in the sidebar.
  3. Under the Text Input section, click Edit.
  4. Click the Add button (+).
  5. Select Japanese from the list, choose Japanese - Romaji, and click Add.

How to use and switch inputs

  • To switch between English and Japanese Romaji: You can toggle your inputs by pressing Control + Space or Command + Space, or by using the language selector in the top-right menu bar.
