Locked Macs: System PIN and ABM transfer

Our company owns several Macs previously managed by an MSP. Following termination of the MSP relationship, all affected Macs became locked and now require a System PIN, with the lock screen directing users to contact the former MSP.

The devices were not transferred to our new Apple Business Manager environment before the lockout. We have purchase records, serial numbers, and proof of company ownership.

Can Apple verify the current ABM/MDM assignment and assist the legal owner in releasing or transferring these devices to our own Apple Business Manager account? What is the correct enterprise escalation route?

We are not seeking to bypass Apple security controls—only the proper ownership verification and recovery process.

Yes. Apple can verify ownership and assist you in removing the MDM/Activation Lock and transferring the devices, provided that your documentation is flawless. Since the former MSP initiated a remote lock command (likely via enterprise-level "Find My" or an MDM PIN command), the hardware is currently unusable.

Here is the correct enterprise procedure to resolve the situation.

Apple is extremely strict regarding the chain of custody. Before contacting them, ensure you have a single PDF file for each device (or a clear, cumulative document) containin: t must clearly show your company’s name, the date of purchase, the price, and ideally, the serial numbers of the affected Macs. If the devices were purchased through an authorized reseller (and not directly from Apple), the invoice must still clearly track the transfer from the reseller to your company.

Do not use standard consumer support channels. At an enterprise level, you have two main options: Log into your new Apple Business Manager account (business.apple.com) as an Administrator. Look for the support or help section within the portal to open an enterprise support ticket. Alternatively, if you already use Apple Financial Services or have a dedicated Apple Account Executive, contact them directly.

If you cannot proceed through ABM, visit the official Apple portal for enterprise activation lock removal (Apple Activation Lock Support for Organizations). Select the option for organizations and initiate an MDM/PIN Lock Removal request. You will be prompted to enter the serial numbers and upload the proof of purchase mentioned above.

Remember you are not asking Apple here. We are all other end users, so no one can give you an official or binding answer unless we provide links to Apple documentation, which AI responses seldom do.

You can try posting in the "Mac In Business: category of these forums:

However, it is my understanding that when a company joins ABM, one person in the firm is designated as your contact with Apple, and has the required contact information for Apple MB support.
