MacBook Air vs. MacBook Pro M5 for a first MacBook

MacBook Air vs MacBook Pro M5

Im just wanting an opinion on which to buy. My first MacBook.

Im very tempted to purchase the MacBook Pro M5 base model but I do feel it is a similar size to what I currently use. I do lots of split screen word docs and web pages and notes. And occasionally watch movies if I’m out for meetings. However, I have also been recommended the Air m5 15inch for the size.

Does the 1” inch difference in screen make a big difference as having seen them in person it is a bit of a difference. But is it better to go for the more equipped, better screen and fan of the pro, or go for the bigger screen on the air 15 inch.

also which is more comfortable for people to type on it used to a larger palm rest.

If budget is no object, yes there MacBook Pro M5 is a great computer.

Otherwise, the MacBook Air will do everything you need and m much much more at a lower cost.

Unless you have a specific reason to need the better screen, or you do a lot of heavy 4K video ditign and gamer rendering that requires active cooling, I don't think the MacBook Pro is warranted.

I use an M4 MacBook 15" MacBook Air for coding and development, photo editing, 2K and 4K video editing and it works fine. Don't think I've ever had it get even slightly warm with what I throw at it.

Everything you ask is so subjective, only you can really decide.

Suggest you “park yourself” in an Apple Store and compare. The staff are very accommodating; just ask where they’d like you to sit.

FWIW, I recently “ upgraded” from a older 15” Intel MBP to a 14” M5(Pro) MBP.

The perceived difference in screen size is insignificant — to me in my own usage — but I absolutely love the reduced footprint as it’s on the road a lot.

YMMV.

I've been a Mac user for decades, and when I bought my newest MacBook Air I was upgrading from a ten year old Intel MacBook Pro. That MBP had all the whistles and bells and lots of ports. The MBA is sparse in comparison, but I have no regrets. The 15-inch screen is the same and the computer works just fine as my daily driver! I expected to be somehow disappointed, but I am not at all.

I give a 👍🏽 to the guidance given by our friend, @Chatanoogan, and agree that you should visit an Apple Store and sit down with both Macs. Decide how you expect to use the computer and then buy whichever you believe will do those tasks most efficiently.
