Meanwhile try going to Mail->View->scroll down to Customize Toolbar... and drag the Get Mail tool into the Toolbar. There never has been a Check Mail button in Mail, it’s Get Mail. You may have accidentally removed it from the Toolbar at some point. What vintage MBP and macOS version are you using anyway? You can also go to Mail->Mailbox->Get All New Mail, or hit Shift+Command ⌘+N to check for new mail. There’s three ways to manually check for new mail. Pick one.
So no, Apple has not removed the check mail button because they think we don't need one anymore.
