i have a table with several rows and i would like to merge two adjacent cells in one row, but the option is greyed out. they are adjacent, in the same table, in the same row, it's not a footer or header, the table is not locked. so what am i missing here? i would like to merge 7A and 7B. at the moment the text is running past the end of the row, and if i wrap the text, it wraps it only in 7A

No need to merge columns A and B.
There is nothing in column B. Numbers has spilled the text from A into B. That is expected behaviour when the cell to the right is blank..
Click on cell A2 and look at the bottom left of the window. All the text is there.
Click on cell B2. Nothing is there.
Make column A wider:

Hi Bob,
When a column is too narrow to display all the text and the cell(s) to the right are empty, Numbers kindly helps us by making the cell contents flow over (not into) those empty cells.
I dragged the Numbers document window smaller, simply to include everything in one screen shot.
I clicked in cell A2 to reveal the full contents in the field on the bottom left:
Please click on your cell B2 to see what it contains. My B2 is blank.
If your column A has no Text Wrap, then I see no way it can display all its contents if column B contains anything at all.
For example, B2 contains "Apples". Cell A2 no longer displays all its content:
Cells B5 and B7 are blank (empty). Text from their partner in column A has spread over those blank B cells.
Without Text Wrap in columnA, I see no way to retain your original width of column A.

Thanks Ian, it is a workaround but i will want the columns as i have them when i finish this table, so changing the width isn’t ideal. The problem remains, why can’t I merge these cells? The ones above are merged.
