iPhone 14 Pro gets warm after battery replacement

Hello!

iPhone 14 Pro overheating after battery replacement - technician says test results are normal, but heat is felt every time

Device: iPhone 14 Pro, iOS 26.4.2

I had my battery replaced at an Apple Store about a month ago. Since then, the phone gets noticeably warm in the upper right corner of the back - right where the battery is located - during normal, light use such as browsing Instagram for 20-25 minutes, or during charging.

This did not happen before the battery replacement.

Room temperature has been comfortable (around 23°C), even at night, so ambient heat isn’t the cause. No temperature warning screen has appeared on the device, and no “Charging On Hold” message has shown up.

I went back to the store to report this. Diagnostics (MRI test) came back showing the device operating within expected thermal range and battery usage as normal. However, when I showed the technician exactly where it gets hot, he felt it himself and acknowledged the warmth. His only suggested resolution was to do a full DFU restore and set the phone up as new.

I’m hesitant to erase and reconfigure my entire device based on a suggestion that seems more like a generic troubleshooting step than a targeted fix, especially since the heat is localized precisely where the new battery is, and the issue started right after the replacement.

Has anyone experienced something similar after a battery replacement? Does a DFU restore actually resolve heat issues like this, or is this more likely a hardware issue with the battery itself?

I don't have an icon for critical temperature

The phone just gets hot, and it's not comfortable to use

Thanks .

The battery is not located in the upper right; that is where the camera is located. The battery runs down the LEFT side from top to bottom, occupying about 2/3 of the width of the iPhone:

When using the camera the top right side of the iPhone will get VERY warm, because the camera consumes a lot of energy when turned on.

You can safely do a DFU restore if you back up the iPhone first:

  1. How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support
  2. Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support - follow the instructions to restore using your computer, do not using Settings/General/Reset (which is not included in those instructions)
  3. Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup - Apple Support

Hi yurii181,

Localized heat right where the battery sits, starting immediately after the replacement — that's a pretty specific pattern. A DFU restore makes sense to rule out software, but honestly if the heat persists after that, it points more toward the battery itself or how it was seated during installation.

I'd go back to the Apple Store and push for a second look at the hardware. Since the technician already felt the warmth himself, that's documented — use that. Ask specifically whether the battery connection or thermal pad was inspected during the repair.

Specifically, where is it getting hot? The battery covers a lot of the inside of an iPhone 14 Pro. I’ve included a photo showing the battery in relationship to an iPhone 14 Pro.

The battery does not extend to the upper right corner as shown. The PMU (Power Management Unit) is near the connection for external power and an overheating battery would get warm/hot potentially along the right edge below the Volume buttons and low from right bottom corner towards the external power connector. Not what you’re describing.

The top edge of the logic board would be in the area you’re referring to. I’m not sure what chip sets are there without looking at a logic board from an iPhone 14 Pro.

I’d return your iPhone and let the technicians examine it if you’re worried. But if I had to guess, you got used to your iPhone working t slower and therefore cooler speeds. When an iPhone battery gets low, the system slows down processors and they produce less heat. Cases mitigate the heat issue to a degree. But my iPhone 14 Pro Max was the warmest running iPhone I’ve ever had. My granddaughter has it now and it still gets warm.
