EarPods Type C sound issues on iPhone 17 Pro Max

My plugged in Apple EarPods Type C are lagging and glitching when I connect them to my iPhone 17 Pro Max. The sound is distorted. When I disconnect and reconnect them, everything is fine. I've tried different pairs of EarPods. Could it be a software issue?
