I sent my son Apple Cash to use for his in app purchases, I recently found out how to stop the purchases from coming out of my card but I cannot add his Apple Cash to his payment. I get this notification…suggestions?

This error happens because of how Apple handles payments within a Family Sharing group.
It could be that purchase sharing restrictions are on. If they are on, Apple routes all App Store and in-app purchases to the Family Organizer’s primary payment method.
Apple Cash vs. Apple Account Balance:
Apple Cash can be used for Apple Pay at store checkouts or in apps that support Apple Pay directly. However it cannot be tied to an Apple ID to pay for recurring App Store subscriptions or direct in-app purchases under Family Purchases.
To make this work, you need to fund his Apple Account Balance instead of his Apple Cash
First, send an Apple Gift Card to his email address or use your device to add funds directly to his apple account
Next, redeem the balance on your son’s device, you do this through the App Store
Finally, when he makes an in-app purchase it will charge money from his Apple Account Balance first.

Okay, so in-app subscriptions need a credit card to process. One time purchases can go through gift cards.
If it is a one-time purchase make sure the gift card is indeed in your son’s balance, and turn off purchase sharing. This will force it to charge the gift card balance.

Some purchases may still require a credit card as proof of age. If the item(s) your son is attempting to purchase is age restricted a credit card is needed to establish his age.

Thanks for your help, I was able to send him an apple gift card, we accepted and redeemed it but app purchases still go through my credit card, there isn't even an option to choose 'Apple Account Balance'.
