CPU/GPU intensive processes and Apps will, by their nature, consume far more power than Apps that make less demands upon the iPad hardware and internal resources. Some graphics intensive Games make considerable demands upon your iPad's hardware. High screen brightness also has significant impact upon battery autonomy - in particular if using your iPad outdoors or in areas with very bright ambient lighting levels.
As mentioned by others here, you may find that [where available] reducing the frame rate will help. Reducing screen brightness will also help to extend battery autonomy - and/or using the iPad while connected to its Power Adapter or other source of external power. Using an external power source after the iPad battery has been fully charged will not significantly increase heating of the iPad.
Depending upon the App(s) in use and screen brightness, you might reasonably anticipate your iPad depleting is battery between 7-15% per hour. CPU/GPU intensive Apps may deplete the battery much more quickly.

Check the settings in Minecraft and see if you can chose a lower game setting. For instance use 30 FPS instead of 60 FPS, and check the lowest visual setting possible.
