Yesterday, July 10, 2026, when I opened Photos on my MacBook Air Sonoma 14.6 - the edit button was (and still is today) missing. I can rotate pictures, but can't crop or otherwise edit. Where did it go? How do I get it back? below is an image of the bar with my Photo options.

According to the user guide for Photos on Sonoma, you have to open the image before the edit button will appear in the toolbar, see: Editing basics in Photos on Mac - Apple Support (EG)
Thanks léonie. I’ve been editing photos like that for years. But the edit button was no longer there. Michael’s suggestion to hit the return key worked fine. It got me to a differently looking page, but one that lets me edit like I’ve done for years.
Richard, That works! I had an edit button in the upper right corner before. Hitting return on the highlighted picture gets me to a similar page (all the options are there but the background is different). But it works with one click, so thanks.
I don't really remember about Sonoma. But in any case, I'm not sure that I have ever used an Edit button. I select a picture and hit Return. Do you not do that?
Going through the Photos darker tool bar, if I click on images (while an image is selected) there's an edit option which works. But now I have extra steps to take to edit. How can I get that button back on the toolbar that I've copied?
