Using iCloud Keychain on Mac Sonoma for passwords

I haven't used a password manager so far and I see that on my macbook with sonoma keychain/icloud will serve. Great. So I enable keychain on icloud, do "sync this mac", and....now what? Most articles that I find online stop there. Will it automatically save a password that I enter to logon to a site? Will it automatically enter this password if I login again? Or, do I have to do something? I have no idea how to use it. Grateful for any instructions. Thanks, Tom

iCloud Keychain makes your passwords and passkeys (as well as other account information, such as credit card information and Wi-Fi information) available on all of your approved Apple devices and keeps that information up to date across devices. This is not a prerequisite if you only have one device (your Mac).

In macOS Sonoma, passwords and credit card informations are found in Safari proper, i.e. Safari is the password manager.

To view or edit your passwords: View saved passwords and passkeys in macOS Sonoma or earlier.

If you want Safari to autofill your username and password for a website you used previously (Autofill your user name and password in Safari on Mac - Apple Support), go to Safari > Settings, click the Autofill tab and check the "User names and passwords" field. For more information: Change AutoFill settings in Safari on Mac - Apple Support.

Note that you can do the same for your credit cards, which can be quite convenient.
