Apple Pay card number persists after iPhone 11 erase

I'm hoping someone has seen this before.

I donated my old iPhone 11 to a friend. Before giving it to her, I followed Apple's recommended procedure:

  • Signed out of my Apple Account.
  • Used Erase All Content and Settings.
  • Removed the iPhone from my Apple Account and Find My.
  • The device no longer appears under my Apple Account.

My friend then set up the iPhone with her own Apple Account.

However, when she tries to add her Nubank card to Apple Pay, the Wallet still references a Device Account Number belonging to my old card (ending in 8448).

I also contacted my bank (Itaú, Brazil). In the bank app, I found an unnamed Apple Pay device ("Device") associated with my old card. I removed that device/token, but it did not solve the problem.

Additional information:

  • The card that was originally on this iPhone was a physical Itaú credit card from around 2022.
  • That card has since been replaced, so I no longer have its original expiration date or CVV.
  • The iPhone was erased correctly before being transferred.
  • The device is no longer associated with my Apple Account.

Has anyone seen a Device Account Number remain on an iPhone after a complete erase?

Is this an orphaned Apple Pay token stored in the Secure Element? Is there any way to remove it without restoring the phone again?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

There more than likely is a token remaining in the secure element. Using the app is not what I meant by contacting the bank. I’d suggest calling their support team and see if they can remove the token.

If they can’t, you’ll need to do a DFU restore and update. A regular factory reset will not remove the token at this point.

Is the device in your possession? Does the token or card show in the Apple Wallet app (not the Settings app)? If so, try removing the token by opening the wallet app, tapping card, tap card details, tap remove card, restart iPhone and confirm it’s gone.

If that doesn’t work or the card/token can’t be removed, you’ll need to work through the issuing bank to get them to remove their token. You’ll need to tell them (probably Apple Pay or IT department) that their token is still bound to the iPhone 11 and they need to de-tokenize the device. They should also be instructed to remove the device from their system.

What country are you currently in?

Thank you for your reply.

The device is no longer in my possession. I donated the iPhone 11 after performing Erase All Content and Settings and removing it from my Apple Account.

The iPhone is now in my rowing coach's possession.

Yes, the old card appears in the Apple Wallet app, not in Settings. When she taps the card and tries to remove it, the iPhone asks for the expiration date and CVV of my old physical Itaú card.

Unfortunately, that card was replaced several years ago (it dates back to around 2021), so those credentials no longer exist.

I have already contacted the issuing bank (Itaú). In the bank app, I found an unnamed Apple Pay device ("Device") associated with my card and removed it. However, this did not solve the issue. The old card still appears in Wallet.

I am currently in Brazil.

Yes. After I performed Erase All Content and Settings, the iPhone restarted to the "Hello" screen and displayed the language selection screen, exactly as expected for a factory reset.

My rowing coach then completed the initial setup using her own Apple Account. The device is no longer associated with my Apple Account and no longer appears in my list of devices.

That's why this behavior is so confusing. Everything indicated that the iPhone had been completely wiped, yet the old Apple Pay token still seems to be present in Wallet.

Through the bank app, I found an unnamed Apple Pay device ("Device") associated with my old card, in addition to my current iPhone.

I removed that unknown device from the bank's Apple Pay management section, which I understood would de-tokenize it. Unfortunately, nothing changed. The old card still appears in the Wallet app on the iPhone 11.

Since removing the device/token from the bank's side did not resolve the issue, I wasn't sure whether there might also be an Apple-side issue or an orphaned token remaining on the device.

Thank you all for your time and suggestions!!

I wanted to come back and share the outcome in case it helps someone else in the future.

Fortunately, Apple Support Brazil contacted my rowing coach directly and was able to resolve the issue.

It turned out that the problem was related to a pending purchase that kept failing and retrying in the background, which created an inconsistency in the payment system. Even so, the Apple support representative considered the behavior unusual, since the current card was already registered, active, had available credit, and was being used successfully for other subscriptions.

In the end, the issue was resolved by Apple Support.

Thank you again to everyone who took the time to reply and share suggestions. I really appreciate the help.

I wasn't the one who spoke directly with Apple Support, so I don't know all the technical details of the resolution.

From what I understood, there was indeed a Device Account Number that nobody could identify, but it turned out to be associated with her Apple ID rather than the iPhone itself.

It also appeared that there was a pending App Store transaction that kept retrying, which left that payment information "stuck" in the account. Apple Support was able to resolve it, and after that she was able to continue the setup normally.

So it seems our initial assumption about a leftover token on the device was probably incorrect, although I don't know exactly what Apple changed on their end.
