iPhone 4 unable to sign in with Apple ID

I just found my old iPhone 4 and am trying to set it up with my Apple ID. I have tried several methods to no avail. First, I reset the phone by powering down, holding the home key, and plugging it into iTunes to reset and update software, selecting "set up as new iphone." I connected to WiFi successfully.

When prompted to enter my Apple ID and password, I did this two different ways: Once, with just the password; and the second time using the password plus the verification code my newer iPhone provided. Neither method worked.

I then tried setting up without an Apple ID, going to settings & entering my password into iCloud, both without and with the verification code. Again, nothing worked.

I know my verification codes are working, as I used one to sign in to this platform just a moment ago.

Are there any other suggested fixes for this? The iPhone 4 was purchased through a provider, though I'm just trying to set it up with WiFi. Thanks.

Great question. I forgot to mention I did attempt to create a new Apple ID on this iPhone 4. It is not supported, so it was unsuccessful.

I then attempted to create a new Apple ID on my (Windows) laptop. The verification code for this action was sent to the email address I selected to use, but when I input the emailed code into the little boxes, I received an "incorrect verification code" notification.

After receiving that notification, and after all of the headaches thus far incurred, I opted to go outside and touch grass for a bit instead of throwing everything out of my second floor window.

When I returned much calmer is when I decided to post the original query above.
