Websites Covertly Accessing My Mac Microphone Through Safari
Is there any way to see what sites might be allowed to access my microphone through Safari if those sites are not currently open?
All I get through the web, including using Safari help, Siri and GenAI is instructions on how to access Safari's website microphone settings, which has not been a useful tool for me unless there is some secret developer modality that invokes access to configured, but not open, websites.
I am running:
MacOS Tahoe 26.5.2
Safari 26.5.2
M4 Mac mini Pro
Backstory:
My Microphone on my Mac becomes active in Safari when my screensaver is on. I see it at least a couple of times a day just after unlocking my screen with a password. It seems persistent, lasting at least 10 minutes before I give up debugging and restart Safari to end the Microphone-On state. Once the browser is restarted, I am able to use my Mac freely for many hours, running apps, including other browsers, on multiple screens without any microphone being activated. The state, as shown below, only seems to reappear after the monitor is re-awakened.
When I see the bright orange microphone status alert, I immediately open Safari settings and look under Websites/Microphone. When in the settings I don't see any open sites or browser tabs that are showing the microphone is allowed. They are all set to "Deny". The activated microphone remains persistent until I restart Safari. This situation was evident on my previous version of MacOS Sequoia that I just upgraded to Tahoe 26.5.2. I also updated to Safari 26.5.2 at the same time. However, the new OS software still exhibits the same issue. (i.e. I cannot see what Safari website is invoking the microphone) All of the open sites are displaying properly in the Safari microphone settings. None show that the microphone is allowed.
My only guess is that I have inadvertently given microphone access to a website in the past and it is covertly popping up when my computer is idle. Since I have not been able to see any websites under my Safari microphone settings, except those that are obviously open, I do not know where to begin purposely navigating to suspect sites to see if they may indeed be allowed to access my microphone.
My original Question:
Is there any way to see what sites might be allowed to access my microphone through Safari if those sites are not currently open?
