In addition to Ian’s solid suggestion: when you say you can’t scrub, I wonder if you meant Skimming. This can be toggled on or off by pressing the S key.

In case deleting preferences doesn’t help, maybe it’s something with the specific project you are working on. You may delete all the render files and try again. If the problem persists, select All, Copy, make a new project and Paste. If there was a subtle corruption in the project it’s likely that the new project will work ok.

AI provided these suggestions for repairing damaged projects . . . some of them new to me. No idea how good they are but they look interesting.

Sometimes a particular strategy (about anything) suggested by AI doesn't work but if you tell it a suggestion failed it can almost always tell you why and suggest something else that does work. Occasionally I have had "conversations" involving 3 or 4 attempts before succeeding.

Furthermore if AI tells you something that is patently untrue you can tell it and it will thank you, stating that it will remember this for future use . . . of course this could lead to abuse by evil people.

You do not need to buy expensive software to repair damaged or corrupted Final Cut Pro (FCP) projects. Most repairs can be completed completely for free using built-in Apple tools, auto-saves, or free utilities.

1. Built-in FCP Tools (No Downloads Required)

Before installing anything, try Apple's native methods to resolve corrupted projects or missing plugin issues:

  • The "Verify and Repair" Trick: Open your timeline in FCP. Hold the Option key, click on the Clip menu at the top of your screen, and select Verify and Repair Project.

  • Revert to an Auto-Save: FCP automatically creates backups of your library. Go to File > Open Library > From Backup, and choose an older, stable version of your project.

  • Delete Generated Files: Sometimes corrupted render files crash a project. Select your Library in the sidebar, go to File > Delete Generated Library Files, and check Delete Render Files.

2. Free Dedicated Apps

For more stubborn corruptions or specific plugin issues, these highly recommended, 100% free apps are worth using:

  • FCP Template Manager: This is an excellent, entirely free app for FCP that quickly repairs projects plagued by missing or broken templates/plugins.

  • FCP Library Cleaner: This free utility lets you clear caches and troubleshoot library errors much faster than FCP's built-in tools.

  • The "XML Export/Import" Workaround

If the file won't open but the app doesn't crash entirely, you can often fix it by flushing the database:

Open your Library and highlight the corrupted project in the Project Library list.

Go to File > Export XML and save the file to your desktop.

Create a brand-new, blank library/project.

Import the XML file you just saved. FCP will rebuild the timeline, purging the corrupted metadata.
