The "someone" who told you this doesn't know what they are talking about.

Although they share some common technologies, Macs and iPads

  • Have different user interfaces
  • Run different operating systems and different applications
  • Differ in terms of the range of processor, RAM sizes, SSD sizes, and expansion options they offer

The Mac user interface is centered around large, non-touch screens with real keyboards and real pointing devices (mice or keyboards). The iPad user interface is centered around small touch screens where touch gestures act as substitutes for having real keyboards and real pointing devices.

You can get external keyboards for iPads. A keyboard can make text entry more convenient, but it will not turn an iPad into a Mac that can run Mac apps. (Apple Silicon Macs can run iPhone and iPad apps if the developers allow this; iPhones and iPads cannot run Mac apps.)

As far as whether an iPad is cheaper than a Mac, it depends on the specific configurations you are comparing.

Totally depends on what you want to do.

if you are reading email, viewing media, web browsing, messaging, and similar, and light content creation, then the iPad can work. Even if you need a Bluetooth keyboard because of heaving typing/word processing.

There are other tasks that need the power, memory, storage, networking, extra monitors, etc… that a traditional personal computer would work better.

If you tell us how you use your computer device(s) maybe we could offer an opinion.
