MacBook Pro M1 Max battery replacement cost and top case

Hi everyone,

I have a MacBook Pro M1 Max (2021) and took it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider after booking the appointment through Apple.

They’ve quoted me ₹69,000 INR for a battery replacement, which seems incredibly high. They explained that the battery can’t be replaced separately because it’s attached to the aluminium top case that also includes the keyboard and trackpad, so they need to replace the entire top case assembly.

However, I’ve also read online that while the battery is glued in, Apple can replace just the battery in some cases rather than replacing the entire top case.

Is ₹69,000 INR a normal or expected cost for this repair? Has anyone else with a 2021 MacBook Pro M1 Max been quoted something similar?

I’m just trying to understand whether this is standard Apple procedure or if I should get a second opinion from another Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Store.

Hi,

An out-of-warranty battery replacement for a MacBook Pro M1 Max costs around $249(plus local taxes) through official Apple services. Because the battery is integrated into the top case, the repair includes a new battery, keyboard, and trackpad. If you have an active AppleCare+ plan and the battery's capacity drops below 80%, the replacement is generally free.

That seems like a high price, I would get another opinion. The price you mentioned is roughly $700 US dollars, but see below from Apple's web site:

First, removing glued-in batteries requires strong solvents that cannot be used in retail settings. That leaves the upper deck replacement as the only option for many Apple Authorized Service Providers and independent providers in areas where Apple-direct service is not available.

Yes, it is cheaper in countries and regions that have Apple-direct service. The deck assembly is still replaced with a fully refurbished assembly†, but Apple gives you credit for the old assembly, which they inspect and refurbish for another customer. That information is based on reports here by experienced senior contributors who had Apple perform a battery service.

Unfortunately, Apple-direct service is not available in all countries of regions. Laws that ban or severely restrict the operation of foreign-owned businesses are a major factor in this.
