Using a wired only AirPort Express for AirPlay

If you are trying to setup your gen2 AirPort Express to use as an AirPlay Receiver with an Ethernet Connection, be sure to use AirPort Utility on an iPhone or iPad.

If you use AirPort Utility on a Mac, you can successfully configure the AirPort Express, but it will then show as no longer found.

However, you will still see it as an AirPlay receiver in sound output options on Macs and iPhone and iPad.

If starting from scratch, setup as you would for adding the Express to an existing wireless network. NOTE that if this fails with "unexpected error" (a known issue), setup again but choose create new network, which will work, and then edit configuration, which will now complete without error.

Once working in wireless mode, plug the Ethernet cable into the WAN port.

Now in AirPort Utility (only on iPhone or iPad):

1. in Advanced | IPv6, choose Link-local only
2. then in Network, select OFF
3. then Update.

The AirPort Express will restart and the light should turn Green.

Now, on all your Macs, configure the WiFi network you are using to set IPv6 to Link-local only.

You should your Airport Express as a sound output option on all your devices.

Note that on a Mac, AirPort Utility will still show the Airport Express as "not found."

If you are able to use a wired connection this saves energy, the Airport Express runs cooler, and if you had issues using AirPlay to the Airport Expressfrom iPad ir iPhone, these should be fixed.
