Mac Mail local folder move doesn't clear iPhone inbox

Using the following:

MacBook Pro - MacOS 15.7.7

iPhone 15+ - iOS 26.5.2

Gmail using Apple Mail app client on both Mac and iPhone

I do most of my email on my Mac and use local folders to store emails. If I delete an email, it deletes the email on my iPhone which is what is expected. However, when I move an email from my Inbox to a local folder on the Mac, the email remains in the Inbox on my iPhone.

Is there a way to have the iPhone emails clear when I move the email to a local folder on my Mac? Also, if I delete the emails from the Inbox on the iPhone, how will this affect my emails that are stored in local folders? I assume they are safe unless I pull it back into the Inbox on my Mac at which time it would be deleted on the next sync.

Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.7

That's not the way it works for me. I just tested it. On my Mac I moved a file from my inbox to a folder On My Mac and watched the same mail disappear from the inbox on my iPhone. When I moved it back it reappeared on my phone.

You might be better off asking this question in a Gmail forum. I don't use Gmail but I believe that it has some non-standard IMAP behaviours for some folders.

Zurarczur, just did some further testing. Sent an email to myself, from Mac Mail, from a different email address. Watched it go into Gmail (website) as well as Inbox in Mac Mail. My iPhone Mail app followed suit. However, when I moved the email from Inbox to a local folder on the Mac, it stayed in the iPhone Inbox but on Gmail website it was removed from the Inbox and the only place I could find it was in a folder (on Gmail website) called All Mail.

Very strange processing and your thought to talk with a Gmail support site now makes even more sense.

Zurarczurx, thanks for the response and glad to hear it works properly for you. Still trying to figure out why this is happening to me. You might have hit on something with Gmail being the issue. Not a google, don't even use Chrome, but I have had gmail addresses since about 2005 (somewhere after y2k).

To your point, I have had other issues with Gmail since I changed from POP to IMAP including a duck.com address, that routes to Gmail, where all those emails go to spam and sometimes never get sent to Mac Mail client even as spam.

Thanks for the idea!
