My daughter lives in the UK and is going to start college in the US this Fall. I was looking at buying a MacBook Air in the US. I can't buy it online for pick up because Apple require a US address to verify the purchase and we don't have one. Is it possible to contact the store directly to ensure the particular type is in stock? Or are there any other suggestions about how best to source one in the US. Thanks.

The warranty for an Apple purchase may (or may not) be restricted to the country of purchase. It may be a good idea to check, and to decide which country it best for completing the purchase.
