It seems that, when I buy something using PayPal, 'something' makes PayPal believe that I am 'using a new device', even though it is the same Mac that I have had for years. It is actually very annoying, because it invokes extra security checks.
"New device" doesn't mean that the Mac looks new, means that it's one that PayPal does not recognize you've used before for PayPal transactions. It's a security measure used by PayPal and other companies (Google, eBay, Apple). It also re-sets if you clear cookies or when they expire.
I use PayPal from a variety of devices, but not any one of them very often. If I go to use it on one, most often my Windows work computer, which I haven't used it on in a while, I'll have to reauthenticate. I find that this is true of most higher-security apps and services.
I'm annoyed by lots of things that are justified as 'security', particularly when they are pointless and repetitive.
I made four transactions on PayPal this morning, all from the same MacBook Pro that I've had for years, and each time PayPal sent me an email warning that someone had logged in as me 'from a new device'. It has even informed me that I am using a 'trusted device', and then almost immediately sent me an email saying it is a new one. I don't have a VPN and I haven't trashed my cache or anything, but something seems to keep triggering PayPal's 'security' system for no useful purpose whatever.
I suspected that it might be something in Safari that is re-setting. For 'security', obviously...
You’re annoyed by strong security? For me the more security and privacy the better.
Anyway do you happen to use a VPN when online?
