iPhone 17 Pro Bluetooth randomly disconnects from every audio device – anyone found a solution?

I'm trying to work out whether anyone has actually managed to resolve this, because after months of troubleshooting I'm getting nowhere.

My iPhone 17 Pro randomly disconnects from Bluetooth audio devices. It can happen anywhere from once every 15 minutes to once every 4 hours, with no obvious pattern.

Initially, I thought it might be caused by moving between Wi-Fi networks or by being out and about (for example, while cycling or walking), as it seemed to happen more often then. However, I've since had exactly the same issue while sitting completely still at my desk, so it doesn't appear to be related to movement, changing Wi-Fi networks, or my environment.

The issue affects:

  • Three different pairs of Bluetooth headphones.
  • A Bluetooth speaker.

All of these devices worked perfectly with my previous iPhone 15 in exactly the same environments. I haven't changed where I live or work, so this doesn't appear to be caused by local interference or my Bluetooth devices themselves.

I've tried everything Apple Support suggested, including:

  • Restarting the phone.
  • Updating iOS.
  • Forgetting and re-pairing every Bluetooth device.
  • Resetting Network Settings.
  • Factory resetting the phone and setting it up again.
  • Removing my VPN.
  • Changing the device name.
  • Apple running remote diagnostics twice.

The only thing that had any effect was resetting the network settings, which stopped the disconnects for around 12 hours before the problem returned. The issue also returned after the phone had been reset, so that didn't resolve it either.

I also contacted Apple Support by phone, but after working through all of the recommended troubleshooting they weren't able to identify the cause or offer any further suggestions. The diagnostics found nothing wrong, but that doesn't match my experience of actually using the phone.

I bought the phone through Sky Mobile, and they've offered to send it away for repair. The problem is that I'd be left without a phone during the repair, and because the fault is so intermittent (once every 15 minutes to once every 4 hours), I don't know how a technician could realistically reproduce it unless they simply left it connected to Bluetooth for hours. I'm concerned it'll just be returned with "no fault found."

I've also found multiple reports online from other people describing very similar Bluetooth issues with the iPhone 17 Pro. That makes me wonder whether this is an intermittent hardware issue or a defect affecting some devices that isn't being picked up by Apple's diagnostics.

Has anyone actually had this fixed? If so:

  • Was it resolved by replacing the handset?
  • Was it a hardware repair?
  • Or is there another solution that Apple Support never mentioned?

At this point I'm fairly convinced this is a fault with the phone itself rather than any of my Bluetooth devices, since the same headphones and speaker all worked flawlessly with my previous iPhone 15 and now all exhibit the same behaviour with this one.

I'm also very reluctant to send the phone away for repair because I'd be left without it for an extended period while continuing to pay for it, only for there to be a significant chance that the intermittent fault won't be reproduced and the phone will simply be returned unchanged. For a flagship device at this price point, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect something as fundamental as Bluetooth connectivity to work reliably. If anyone has had a successful repair or replacement for this issue, I'd really appreciate hearing about your experience before I decide what to do.

The one thing which caught my eye is "removing my VPN." Did you actually go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management and removed the VPN Profile there? Then remove any associated app, as well as ANY cleaner or anti-virus apps, which also provide no benefit, but can interfere with connectivity. Then Force Restarted your iPhone --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

Otherwise, while I know you're looking for help, but your post falls into Poll Taking when you ask if anyone else has done anything and that is not permitted here on this forum.

We have iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max. On my 17 Pro Max, I have no less than 9 Bluetooth devices connected and in no case do any of them randomly disconnect. If this was an issue affecting a lot of people, this forum would be blown up with users complaining, but it's not. The Tech Press would be all over this, but they're not. That doesn't mean you don't have an issue, but it's certainly not one shared by many.

If nothing helps, I would schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar and have your phone tested. They may suggest wiping the phone to factory and not restoring from backup, then testing new Bluetooth pairings of your devices.

Bluetooth interference can potentially cause connectivity issues due to the disruption of the wireless communication between devices. Bluetooth operates in the 2.4 GHz frequency range, which is also used by various other devices such as Wi-Fi routers, microwaves, cordless phones, and even some baby monitors. When multiple devices are operating nearby and using the same frequency band, interference can occur.

Here's how Bluetooth interference can impact connectivity:

  1. Audio Streaming Interruptions: When you're streaming music via Apple Music or while playing audio content, Bluetooth interference can disrupt the connection between your device (such as an iPhone) and the Bluetooth speaker or headphones. This interference can result in the audio stuttering, dropping out momentarily, or experiencing poor sound quality.
  2. Bluetooth devices transmit data in packets. Interference can cause some of these packets to be lost or corrupted during transmission. As a result, the receiving device may have trouble decoding the audio correctly, leading to stuttering or delayed responses.
  3. Bluetooth signals can be weakened by interference from other devices operating on the same frequency band. If the signal strength drops significantly, it can affect the stability of the connection between your device and the Bluetooth accessory. This can result in intermittent stuttering as the connection struggles to maintain a consistent data flow.
  4. Bluetooth uses different channels within the 2.4 GHz frequency range to establish connections. When there are many Bluetooth devices nearby, multiple connections can create congestion on the available channels. This congestion can cause interference, leading to degraded performance for Apple Music streaming.

To mitigate Bluetooth interference issues and reduce stuttering:

  1. Minimize the number of active Bluetooth devices near each other. Switch off or move away devices that are not in use or causing interference.
  2. Increase the distance between your Bluetooth devices (e.g., your iPhone and Bluetooth speaker/headphones) to reduce the impact of interference.
  3. Keep your devices' firmware up to date, including your iPhone and any Bluetooth accessories. Manufacturers often release firmware updates that can improve the performance and stability of Bluetooth connections.
  4. Objects like walls, furniture, or large metal surfaces can obstruct Bluetooth signals and contribute to interference. Ensure a clear line of sight between your devices to optimize signal strength.
  5. Some Bluetooth devices allow you to manually switch to different channels within the 2.4 GHz range. Check the user manual or settings of your Bluetooth accessory to see if you can change channels to find a less congested one.
  6. If your Wi-Fi router supports it, consider using the 5 GHz frequency band for Wi-Fi connections instead of 2.4 GHz. This can reduce potential interference between Bluetooth and Wi-Fi signals.

By implementing these steps, you can help minimize Bluetooth interference and improve the overall performance of Audio.
