Remote control/draw screen share not working

I FaceTime my friends frequently and we like to share our screens and remote control each others or draw for fun. However the option to request remote control or draw isn't always there. It's very annoying and I think it's something Apple should fix. Idk why it just disappears. No settings are ever changed.
