Link language layouts to specific keyboards

Is there a way to make a language "stick" to a specific keyboard?

I use a set up with both my German and English Bluetooth keyboards, and I would like to keep the German keyboard always typing in German. I have in the past always had to push the Globe, but I forget to.

I would like to tell my laptop that any input from the English keyboard should use the English layout, while any input from the built-in keyboard should use the German layout.

I know I can choose to switch but I work very quickly and I am not always reading the same screen where I type, so it can be difficult to go fix every letter.

I have not found a shortcut or other feature to make this possible, which seems like an awful oversight.

It is a work computer so I do not want to install third party software!

Hi,

No, macOS does not have a native, built-in setting to lock a specific input language/layout to a distinct physical keyboard when multiple hardware keyboards are connected. Instead, macOS treats all input sources globally across any active keyboard.

Native macOS Options

Automatic Switching: You can turn on Automatically switch to a document's input source in (Write in another language on Mac - Apple Support (SG))settings so the Mac remembers your last-used language for a specific file or app window.
Quick Toggling: Use Control + Spacebar to switch languages or press the dedicated Globe / Fn key if available on your hardware.

Workarounds

Third-Party Apps: Utilities like Keyboard Pilot or SwitchKey let you assign specific default languages to specific applications rather than specific physical hardware.
Advanced Remapping: Power-users sometimes use automation tools like Karabiner-Elements to detect specific connected device IDs and script layout shifts, though it requires advanced setup.

Swapping Keyboards:

I don't have two language keyboards, at this very moment, but report back if this works...

Adding these Keyboards

Go to: Settings
Select: Keyboard
Click: Edit... button in Text Input pane
Click: + button (bottom-left corner of screen)
Select: [the language]

Selecting this Source:

Go to: Settings
Select: Keyboard
Click: Keyboard Shortcuts button
Click: Input Sources in the left pane
