How to close an open tab group in Safari on Mac

I click on a tab group in the Mac Safari sidebar to open those tabs in the browser window. However, I cannot find a way to reverse the process. How do I completely close the tab group and leave myself with a new, empty window?

I can get a new, empty window with File > New Window, but that leaves the tab group open in a hidden window. I want to shut down the tab group entirely for the day.

I cannot find the answer to this in the Apple Safari User Guide or anywhere else on the internet.

Running Safari 26.5.2, macOS Tahoe 26.5.2, on a Mac mini M1, 2020

How about creating a new tab group consisting only of the Start Page? You would select it when you want to close the current tab group.

A good suggestion, however as soon as I open the Empty Page tab group and open a webpage, it populates the tab group with that page. And I'm back to having an open tab group that I cannot close. The only way I can close it is by closing that iteration of Safari and responding Yes to closing the open tab. This is too bizarre for there not to be a solution!
