I'm getting fed up entering my Apple password (just got a new Neo after using a Macbook Pro for 11 years) - the device never leaves home and I'd like to remove the password, if that's possible. I suspect it's not & if not shouldn't it be an option for those who don't care too deeply about machine security?

Your Apple Account password should not be required very often. Only when you are logging into an Apple website like iCloud.com or music.apple.com or tv.apple.com for instance. or when you are trying to download Apps from the App Store or media from the iTunes Store. In these 2 latter cases, it prevents accidentally purchasing things by adding an extra layer of confirmation.
If you are referring to something else, or your Apple Account password it really being requested very often, then please explain clearly when and where this is happening.
Are you perhaps confusing your Apple Account's password for your Mac's user profile password you enter when logging on to the computer?
If you explain clearly what and when its happening, we can tell you if it's possible to disable it.

Presumably the password in-use is long, complex, and tedious to re-enter.
You can easily change just your local user password to something easier / faster to enter AND avoid the potential issues cited in earlier replies.

If you do enable the Automatically Log in as option, be sure to write down your password, and store that piece of paper in a safe place.
You may need the password from time to time, and if you are not actively using it most of the time, it will be easy to forget it.
I am unclear why it is here necessary to enter your Apple Account password at all often.
What is prompting for that? (An app store purchase, maybe?)
