iPhone SE 3: iOS 17 to 18 update questions
I'm (still) running iOS 17.6.1 on my iPhone SE 3 256 GB. I know I should have upgraded to iOS 18, but my Golden Rule in technology is "If it ain't broken, don't touch it". So I'm usually a few steps back in hardware and software.
Then I heard about those expiring certificates coming next January and, when I finally decided to upgrade to iOS 18, it was too late, the download was not available anymore. I really don't want to jump into that OS26.
And one day, when I checked Software Update, I saw the iOS 26 update available (at 17.66 GB!) but also completely at the bottom an "Update to iOS 18" choice. When I check that update, it's 18.7.8 but it says I can't download it, which is normal because I keep all my photos and videos on my iPhone, so I don't have a lot of space left, and certainly not 17.66 GB! In fact, when I first saw that update (and had more space) it says it was about 4 GB.
My question is... if I make space and try to download 18.7.8, is it going to:
1) Download and update my iPhone from 17.6.1 to 18.7.8
2) Download the update but tell me it can't continue because I'm running iOS 17
3) Tell me I can't download the update because I'm running iOS 17
I'd really like Option 1 to work but dread Option 2, which would add 4 to 18 GB of data to my already full iPhone for nothing. And then again, I don't understand why it offers me 18.7.8 if it can't be installed on my iPhone.
On a side note, I find 17.66 GB a lot for an iPhone update. Currently, Apple offers me an update for my iMac from 15.7.7 to 26.5.2 for "only" 10.05 GB. What gives?!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Luke
