Battery drain on iOS 26.5

Since the 26.5.2 update my ipad consistently stops charging at 80% because of a overheating battery. The ipad feels uncomfortably hot.

That is the fast charging feature when using a compatible charge and is exactly what you should be seeing. The iPad fast charges to 80%, which does produce heat, and then you should see a message that charging is on Hold while it cools down. After that, charging proceeds at a slower rate until it reaches 100%. The purpose of that is to protect your battery. All is well, enjoy your iPad, it is working exactly as it is supposed to.

That is NOT overheating. It IS a new feature, where an iOS device fast charges to 80%, then stops charging, with a notification charging is being paused until the device has cooled. We ALL get these notifications, but it is NOT overheating.
