Apple Photos - how to RENAME a photo in my photos app??

You can rename the images before importing them to Photos library. Photos preserves the original name in its database and automatically renames them to use unique names so there are no name clashes. Photos can export using the original import names.

I routinely rename all images and movies with YYYY-MMDD-hhmm-ss.* pattern before importing with GraphicConverter based on their metadata date so they sort correctly in Finder lists and errors in dates are easy to spot and the dates are stored in two places.

You can’t actually rename the actual name of a photo in the photos app but you can open photos click on the photo and press “i” on the bottom of the screen and press “add a caption“ and type in a caption but if you want to actually change the name click on the photo in the Photos app and press ••• and copy and open files an iCloud Drive and hold down on an empty space and when a menu pops up press paste and then you can rename the file there but copy and pasting that back into photos doesn’t really work and we’ll just set it back to the default name

I tired this and it doesn't seem to work in Photos on my Mac or iPad. I think it's a generally a bad idea to attempt to change filenames in Photos. The actual filenames are GUID, 128 bit global unique identifiers, and the original filename is not directly attached to any picture. If you go messing around in the Photos database, then there may be irreversible corruption.

As Yer_Man says, Photos is an Image Management System, and the way it works is different from the File Management Systems, like Finder or Explorer, that we're used to. The "filename" that you see in the Info Window in Photos is actually not the name of any file in the Photos Library. Images are not files, and the image you see on the screen is not a file.
