Continuity Camera iPhone 14 to Mac mini M4 doesn't work (unless I use a usb cable to connect them first)

Hi all, I can't get continuity camera to work between my iphone 14 and mac mini m4. Both are on the same wifi (mac mini is on ethernet too but wifi is on), bluetooth is on on both and continuity settings are correct.


The only way to make it work that I found is if I first connect the iphone to the mac using a cable, unlock the iphone, start i.e. facetime, it can see the iphone camera and works ok. Then I can even disconnect the usb cable and it will continue using the camera. But then if I close and reopen facetime, it won't be able to see the camera anymore (until I connect it via a usb cable again).

Wireless Continuity Camera failing to initialize on desktop Macs like the M4 Mac mini without a preliminary USB connection is a known ecosystem quirk. Fixing this requires verifying shared network settings, toggling Continuity switches, and resetting wireless handoff states between your iPhone 14 and Mac mini M4.

Wireless System Requirements.


  • Apple Account: Both your iPhone 14 and Mac mini must sign in with the exact same Apple Account using two-factor authentication.
  • Radios: Turn on both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both devices.
  • Proximity: Keep the iPhone within 30 feet (10 meters) of the Mac mini.
  • Network Sharing: Ensure neither device is sharing its internet connection or mobile hotspot.

Troubleshooting Steps

  • Toggle the Switch: On your iPhone 14, go to Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity (or AirPlay & Handoff) and turn Continuity Camera off, then back on.
  • Check Continuity Setting on Mac: Open System Settings on your Mac mini, go to General > AirPlay & Handoff, and verify that iPhone Cellular Calls, Continuity Handoff, and related relay features are enabled.
  • Reset Network Settings: If the wireless handshake refuses to trigger natively, reset network settings on your iPhone 14 via Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
