Mac mini M4 vs. MacBook Pro M5 Pro in DaVinci Resolve
My Mac mini base model served me very well the last 1 1/2 years, recently bought a MacBook Pro M5 Pro base model just before price hike, mainly for mobility. Some interesting observations between the two when running Davinci Resolve Studio. I tested with two clips each around 1.5 hours (seminars).
- AI tasks seems significantly faster on the M5 Pro - for example subtitle generation on the M5 Pro is twice as fast as the M4. I have yet to test all AI stuff but what I have tested like subtitle and Superscale, the M5 Pro is much further ahead. Sadly, accuracy of subtitle I think is roughly the same, did not see improved accuracy on the M5 Pro - perhaps shouldn't expect to see improvements in the first place.
- Rendering final output however can be about the same, depending on the timeline. Did 4K export to external Thunderbolt drives on both machines, very simple color correction on B-cam clips and few transitions, no fancy AI stuff, both rendered at around 80fps, M5 Pro is just a little faster. However if having heavy AI stuff like Superscale, Magic Mask, etc., M5 Pro does pulls ahead.
Overall I think the M4 base model can absolutely handle the job I needed it to do, just that it might slow down when hitting any section with heavy effects. Wish to put things into perspective - most AI features and/or effects are short duration like transition or short clips, going to slow down overall process but I think probably not by a lot. Unless my timeline is filled with effects or Superscale the whole thing, M4 base model should be able to handle it smoothly.
Just my personal observation, hopefully helpful to the community especially those considering their purchase options. I think the Mac mini M4 is still a great little machine for the money.
