Live Translation fails on AirPods with locked iPhone

Hi everyone,

I’m having an issue with Live Translation on my AirPods and I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced the same thing.

When I press and hold the AirPods stem to activate Live Translation while my iPhone screen is locked, I hear the activation sound, so the gesture is being recognized. However, Live Translation never actually starts.

If I unlock my iPhone or simply wake the screen first, then perform the exact same gesture, Live Translation launches immediately and works perfectly.

So it seems like:

● AirPods correctly detect the gesture.

● The activation sound plays.

● Live Translation only fails to open when the iPhone screen is off/locked.

● As soon as the screen is awake, it works normally.

Has anyone found a fix for this? Is there a setting that allows Live Translation to launch while the iPhone is locked, or could this be a bug in the current software version?

For reference:

● iPhone is updated to the latest software available.

● AirPods firmware is also up to date.

● I’ve already tried restarting both devices and reconnecting the AirPods, but the issue remains.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Which iPhone model do you have?

Since you will have to use the Translation App for the response, this might be the reason for having to unlock the iPhone:

...

To use Live Translation:

  1. Listen to the other person speak. Your AirPods automatically translate what the person said to your preferred language. If you’re in a noisy environment, there is the added ability to use your iPhone's microphones in addition to those on AirPods to enhance the translation performance. To do this, you can simply try moving your iPhone closer to the other person speaking.
  2. Speak your response.
  3. Use the Live tab in the Translate app on your iPhone to show a transcript to the person you’re speaking with, or press the Play button to play a translation on your iPhone speaker.
  4. If the person you’re speaking with has supported AirPods and has set up and started Live Translation, they can use their AirPods to listen to your response.

To stop Live Translation, tap the X button.

Thank you for your reply.

I have Iphone 17 ProMax

I understand how Live Translation is supposed to work. However, my issue is different.

When I press and hold the AirPods stem while my iPhone is locked, I hear the activation sound, which indicates the gesture is recognized, but Live Translation never starts.

If I simply wake or unlock the iPhone and perform the exact same gesture, Live Translation launches immediately.

I’m trying to determine whether this is the expected behavior, a setting I’m missing, or a software bug. Is Live Translation supposed to be able to start directly from AirPods while the iPhone is locked?

Thank you.
