EarPods screeched loudly while listening to music

While listening to music on my EarPods, they suddenly let out a loud, extremely high-pitched beep that lasted for 2-3 seconds, then shut off, even though they were still connected to my phone. I plugged them back in, and they started working again. This is the second time an occurrence like this has happened. Another issue, a couple of times I have felt sparks or crackles coming from the speakers, which burned my ears. Is this normal?

On a somewhat positive note, it seems that my EarPods now support spatial audio from Spotify.

If you have observed sparks, or experienced burning from your EarPods, you should (a) stop using them - and (b) immediately seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page.
