Touch ID not working on MacBook Pro M1 Max after Tahoe 26.6

Hi everyone,

I’m having an issue with the Touch ID sensor on my MacBook Pro (M1 Max) after updating to macOS Tahoe 26.6.

Before the update, Touch ID was working normally. Since updating, the power button still works, but Touch ID no longer detects my finger at all.

When I go to System Settings → Touch ID & Password → Add Fingerprint, it asks me to place my finger on the Touch ID sensor, but nothing happens. It just keeps waiting indefinitely and never detects any touch.

Here’s what I’ve already tried:

  • Restarted the Mac multiple times.
  • Booted into macOS Recovery.
  • Ran Apple Diagnostics, which reported “No issues found.”
  • Tried enrolling different fingers.
  • Confirmed that the power button itself is working normally.

There has been no liquid damage, no physical impact, and no hardware repairs. The issue appears to have started only after updating to macOS Tahoe 26.6.

Has anyone else experienced this after updating to Tahoe 26.6?

  • Were you able to fix it with software?
  • Did reinstalling macOS help?
  • Or did it end up being a hardware issue requiring repair?

I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has experienced the same problem. Thank you!

I have seen some similar reports where Touch ID stops responding after a macOS update, although I have not seen enough confirmed cases to say that macOS Tahoe 26.6 is definitely the cause.

Based on your description, the most important detail is that the Touch ID enrollment screen does not detect any finger input at all.

When a fingerprint is not recognized because of a dirty sensor or a finger placement issue, the system usually responds and asks for another attempt. A completely unresponsive enrollment process suggests either a failure of the Touch ID service or a problem with the Touch ID sensor communication.

Since you have already restarted, tested multiple fingers, checked Recovery mode, and run Apple Diagnostics, I would try one more software step before assuming hardware failure.

Boot into macOS Recovery and reinstall macOS Tahoe over the existing installation without erasing the disk.

This can replace damaged system components while keeping your data intact:

If Touch ID still does not respond after a reinstall, I would be suspicious of the Touch ID sensor assembly itself.

The power button can continue working even if the fingerprint sensor portion has failed, so a working power button does not rule out a Touch ID hardware issue.

One additional test would be useful: after booting into Recovery, does the Mac ever ask for or accept Touch ID authentication?

If Touch ID is completely unavailable even in Recovery, that points more toward hardware. If it works in Recovery but not in the normal macOS environment, that suggests a software or security subsystem problem.

but i even tried troubleshooting touch ID If Touch ID isn't working on Mac - Apple Support (CA)

This is very concerning ..i thought apple devices last decades ..but i think i might reconsider investing so much money into Mac now ..already my motherboard has been compromised within an year even after replacement i got these issues after 2 years and now i dont even have Apple care.. and

The point is ..i didnt do anything wrong ..neither spilled water or dust . Its just software of apple is so doomed that even the Touch ID gets malfunctioned/Totalled after updates and they charge us.

How to reach out to @Apple software Team to help please fix this?

"Decades" would be a long time (though I do have an iPod Dock Connector from 2003 that still works fine, but can no longer be synced with modern Macs because FireWire is fully deprecated).

The only way to reach out to the software team is via the Product Feedback pages, but Apple will not respond to submissions. Instead, you may want to contact Apple Support:
