Frustrated creating master slide layouts in Keynote

I am using Keynote 15.3. I want to create my own master slides. I have searched online, watched YouTube videos, the whole thing, but nothing works. In the photo, I want to take what i thought was a master slide in the top left of the "choose a Layout" box and have that show up as my slide. I am so frustrated! Can anyone help me?

To use a specific slide layout as your active slide, you need to apply that layout to a slide in your deck using the Slide Layout button in the Format sidebar, rather than trying to drag or copy the master layout thumbnail itself.

How to Apply a Layout to Your Slide

  • Click on your slide in the left-hand slide navigator.
  • Look at the Format sidebar on the right.
  • Click the Slide Layout button near the top of the sidebar.
  • Click the specific layout style you want from the pop-up menu.
