iPhone 17: 2x gesture drops out on screen edges
Subject: iPhone 17 - Intermittent Touch Dropout on Screen Edges (Hold-to-2x Gesture)
Hello,
I'm writing to report a touch responsiveness issue on my iPhone 17 that I'd like documented and, if possible, escalated as a software bug.
Device: iPhone 17 (base model), recently purchased
Software: Latest iOS version installed (26.6)
Issue:
When I press and hold my finger on the left or right edge of the screen to activate the "hold for 2x speed" playback feature in apps like Instagram and Twitter/X, the gesture is frequently interrupted even though I am not lifting or moving my finger. The 2x indicator appears, begins to fill, and then cancels on its own mid-hold, as if the system registered a touch-up event that did not actually happen. I then have to reposition my finger and try again, sometimes multiple times, to get the gesture to register properly.
What I've already ruled out:
- No case or screen protector is installed on the device, so this is not an accessory interference issue.
- I have force restarted the device and confirmed it is running the latest available iOS update.
- I tested across multiple apps (Instagram, Twitter/X, TikTok) with the same result, so it does not appear to be app-specific.
- I have a screen recording that clearly shows the touch indicator dropping mid-hold without any finger movement, which I'm happy to share if useful.
Additional context:
- My previous device was an iPhone 13, which never exhibited this behavior with the same gesture.
- My brother purchased an iPhone 17 about 6-7 months ago and independently reported the exact same issue, which suggests this may not be an isolated unit defect.
