Subscription refund run-around. Apple to blame.

I understand App Store purchases are subject to Apple’s refund review. I purchased LinkedIn Premium solely for an extended job search, obtained a job, and attempted to cancel after approximately two weeks of the new annual billing period. I will now be without employment income for roughly three months while completing required credentialing. LinkedIn has confirmed that Apple controls this transaction and cannot refund an App Store purchase. I am requesting escalation for a one-time hardship exception: preferably a full refund of the $250 annual charge, or a prorated refund reflecting the short period of use.

What do you mean Apple is to blame? You agreed to the charge by approving the exact amount and for the term you specified and that required you to double click the side button to accept. Also on the approval screen is the message that says to avoid a renewal charge, you should cancel a day before that date. It seems you are being billed exactly what you agreed to and it also required authentication with Face ID/Touch ID or Passcode after initially agreeing to those terms.

Apps have different prices depending on the length of the subscription, for example a monthly renewal is likely to be more than an annual renewal. What sense would it make to have the different prices if there was any such thing as a prorated refund? Everyone would just purchase the longest term possible and refund after a month to receive a much better rate than signing up for the monthly subscription. If you want to change the term of the subscription, you can do that too, but it must be done a day before renewal, not 2 weeks after.

In any case, most purchases in the App Store are final, since it does require that explicit action on your part to approve the amount and length of the subscription. At times Apple may provide a compassionate refund, but it should never be expected.

Nobody from Apple participates in providing support here, so any such request for a refund here is not going to be seen by Apple. The option you have for requesting a refund is here, where you usually get 1 appeal after a denial, and then the decision is final.

Just so you know your post about financial struggles are not being heard by Apple when posting on a Community Support site made up of other users. That information would need to be provided in the refund request you had made using the refund link. You can also contact Apple directly here:

Word choice means everything when asking for a compassionate refund. Blaming the company is not likely to ever result in a positive outcome when you had already agreed to be charged for the amount.

And if this is the case - Nobody from Apple participates in providing support here, so any such request for a refund here is not going to be seen by Apple. The option you have for requesting a refund is here, where you usually get 1 appeal after a denial, and then the decision is final - why are you spending your Saturday responding to my financial struggle.

You’re right that I made a mistake by not canceling before the renewal date. I am not claiming that the charge was unauthorized or that Apple violated the subscription terms.

My frustration is with the refusal to consider a reasonable, one-time exception after I contacted Apple shortly after the renewal. I have been an Apple customer for approximately 20 years and have spent thousands of dollars on Apple products and services. I had also paid for LinkedIn Premium throughout a six-month job search and canceled once I finally secured employment. Unfortunately, I will now be without income for roughly three months while completing credentialing for that job.

I understand why annual subscriptions are priced differently and why prorated refunds are not routinely offered. I am not suggesting that every customer should be allowed to purchase an annual plan and cancel whenever convenient. I am asking Apple to consider the specific circumstances, my long customer history, and the fact that I requested help only about two weeks into the renewed term.

I also understand now that this community is made up of other users and that Apple employees do not review refund requests here. My original wording blaming Apple was overly broad. My issue is that Apple controls the billing decision because the purchase was made through the App Store, while LinkedIn says it cannot issue the refund itself. I have already used the formal refund process and was hoping there might be another legitimate escalation route.
