External HD is not recognized by macOS after freeze.

My external Seagate FireCuda Gaming HDD ceased operating after it froze while I loaded a game via Steam.

Now it shows under "System Information -> USB -> USB 3.1 Hub -> FireCuda Gaming Hard Drive", but it does not show in Finder, Disk Utility, or the Terminal via the commands "diskutil list" or "ls /Volumes". The Seagate website does not have any drives for me to download either, and the "Seagate Toolkit" does not detect it. I have also tried clearing the temporary memories (MSC and the other one) unsuccessfully.

Your symptoms suggest that macOS is detecting the FireCuda’s USB controller, but it is not detecting the actual hard drive.

Because it appears under System Information >> USB but not in Disk Utility, diskutil list, or Finder, the issue is likely with the drive hardware, enclosure, or USB-to-SATA bridge rather than a missing Seagate driver.

Try the following:

  1. Disconnect the drive, shut down the Mac completely, wait about one minute, then restart and reconnect the drive directly to the Mac (avoid hubs or docks). If possible, try a different USB cable and port.
  2. Check whether macOS sees the drive: diskutil list

If the FireCuda does not appear there, macOS is not receiving a usable storage device.

  1. Open Disk Utility and choose View >> Show All Devices. If the drive still does not appear, it is not being recognized at the disk level.

Apple’s guidance for external storage issues:

If the drive spins normally but never appears in diskutil list, try connecting it to another computer. If it also fails there, the enclosure or hard drive itself is likely damaged.

If the data is important, avoid erasing or reformatting the drive and avoid repeated repair attempts until the hardware issue is identified.

A final diagnostic step is testing the drive through another enclosure or SATA-to-USB adapter to determine whether the enclosure or the disk has failed..
