How to keep iPhone 17 Pro Always On Display truly always on?

iphone 17 pro iOS 26.6

I would like to have my "always on display" (AOD) truly be always on and not turn itself off when it thinks I'm not looking to save battery life.

Any way to make this happen? Per documentation: Settings -> Display & Brightness -> AOD, "The display will turn off automatically to save battery life when not in use."

This is not an AOD, this is a widget screen that guesses whether I'm using the device or not, under mysterious criteria such as if it hasn't recognized a face in a certain amount of time... How long is that? NOBODY KNOWS... I'm struggling severely with Apple's vague as heck documentation. If I knew exactly what the criteria are, I could create my own solution, but the iOS overlords apparently think that's proprietary info, and not to be shared with the unwashed masses.

I'm open to any lateral approaches if anyone can mention them. By that I mean things like using a third party app to send a heartbeat signal to the display so it defeats the turn-off mechanism. Another idea I'm trying out is changing the auto-lock setting to "Never," but this would not work for me long term.

Ultimately, I need the phone to just display something that glows so I can find the thing in the morning.

I do not see how an AOD setting that, nevertheless, turns itself off according to its whims, has any utility at all. I want the display to be always on with no exceptions and no decision logic executed behind my back!

I’m not sure if it helps to add this, but the reason I want to keep the display Always on, as in 100% of the time - regardless of any conditions, is so that I can find it when I lose track of the device. I have a number of glossy black surfaces in my apartment, and strong lights hurt my eyes because of a medical condition.
Therefore, my ideal behavior of always on meaning always on is so that I might locate the device in low light after the point where I have misplaced it, despite the fact that most of the surfaces at home are black, and I sometimes mistakenly put it somewhere without taking note of that location. If the phone would only behave according to the meaning of the words used to name the setting, then my problem would be solved.

We get what you're asking for. But you do understand this is a user to user only forum, right? Apple isn't here, doesn't participate here and won't see what you'd like here. As users only, no one here had anything to do with how Apple designed AOD. Nor can anyone here change how it works.

You are welcome to provide feedback to Apple here --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple I wouldn't expect Apple to change this for you as it would take a LOT of folks asking for this and we're just not seeing people ask for it here.

If your real use case need is you can't always remember where you put the phone, enable Siri When Locked and simply ask Siri a question. Your screen will light up and you'll be able to see your phone. You could ask something simple like.......Siri (or Hey Siri, depending on what you've set it to) what's the temperature right now?

You can do this with the Shortcuts app using a personal automation to turn your flashlight on triggered by a specific time of day. Apple’s automation triggers include “Time of Day,” which can run at a set time and repeat on chosen days.

Apple’s installed user base is over 1.5 billion users. Making a single user feature perfectly compatible for every user is literally impossible. Apple will make changes (or not make changes) based partially on the feedback they receive through their official channel, linked below and good luck.

Hey there I’m sorry for taking so long to respond. The problem is that I don’t know what conditions are necessary or sufficient to make the “Always on” display turn itself off. I had already set standby display to “never” for the turn off display setting. I believe that I made the setting when I first enabled standby mode. That was a few years ago.

I have more recently turned on the “Raise To Wake” setting and that was 2 OS revisions ago. By contrast I only recently stumbled upon AOD, meaning after the release of the current iOS version. I’m not sure if you have any more knowledge but I thank you for your time and knowledge.

I like the idea of using an automation. I have not yet had a use for the automation ability, so it will be interesting to try. Thanks for the suggestion!

Re: your mention of features not being able to make everyone happy, I’m not expecting any single feature to be a certain way.

However, it’s not impossible to document how things work in detail sufficient for me to know what behavior to expect from my device. That’s sufficient for me, but I don’t think that a feature that turns off the display under vague and likely shifting conditions is appropriate to name as “Always On.”

—-even more words….

I am sorry for venting in my OP. I know that Apple has a feedback link, but I have no evidence to support a belief that anyone technical gets that feedback, either, directly or indirectly. It might happen, but since they don’t respond over that channel, nor do they put out informative release notes, whether I am not simply typing into the void there, too, is anyone’s guess.

I don’t expect them to be monitoring this forum, either. My first post was written in a state of high frustration, being at the end of my wits following several hours of searching within my phone, Apple’s user guide and the WWW at large. Hence the very detailed complaining. Again, sorry to be annoying.

I’m not sure if it helps to add this, but the reason I want to keep the display Always on, as in 100% of the time - regardless of any conditions, is so that I can find it when I lose track of the device. Yes, I know this is a strictly user to user forum, as I acknowledged in a slightly earlier post than the one you refer to above. I'm venting for the most part, but it would be a little comforting if anyone else can relate with my frustration over the phone overriding the user by deciding to turn off features unexpectedly. Additionally, I have sent a feedback comment, for whatever good that may do.

Nonetheless, I have attempted enabling "Siri when locked." The result is that Siri is over-responsive to anything that sorta sounds like "Siri" or "hey Siri," meaning I have the choice of dealing with the original problem, or having my phone frequently interrupting me during conversations with IRL humans (or non-humans as the case may be).

I would recommend to only use "Hey Siri" as the activation word in Siri Settings instead of the shortened "Siri" activation word.. That does significantly reduce the false interactions for similar sounding words such as "Shirley", "Cereal", "Series", "Serious" for example where they are not activated when "Hey Siri" is the activation word..

Alexa also has the same problem with words like "Election", "Lexus", "a Letter", "Alexis".

OK... so what are the conditions when you're looking for it and the display is off?

Is the room dark? What focus is enabled? etc.

Room would be dark and no focus enabled. Not on standby. Phone not picked up in hours because I would have been sleeping (or lost the phone, because it goes dark whenever and then it's much more difficult to search for.
