MacBook Pro: Finder folders open in tabs, setting unchecked

MacBook Pro macOS 26.6.1.

Since one of the latest updates (not sure which one) Folders open in tabs instead of in separate windows.

Finder > Settings > General has the option 'Open folders in tabs instead of new windows'. It appeared to be checked.

I unchecked it but that did not help. I relaunched the Finder but same result. I restarted the Mac, still same result.

(It did stay unchecked during those tries.)

Anyone?

To fix this, check the system-wide tab preference in System Settings > Desktop & Dock under the Windows section, where Prefer tabs when opening documents might still be set to Always, which overrides Finder's individual setting. Change it to Manually.
