iTunes on Windows 11 fails to import CDs from external drive
I have been using iTunes on an old Windows 7 desktop for many years and use it to rip many of my CDs and sync to my iPhone 15 Pro, without any issues. I bought a Windows 11 laptop a while ago and eventually got around to copying my iTunes library onto it, and bought a Verbatim USB3 external CD/DVD/Blu-Ray drive. I tested the drive on my desktop (though it has two internal drives which I've previously used) and it works perfectly for importing CDs into iTunes. The drive also plays CDs and loads data from CDROMs perfectly in any other program on my laptop.
However in iTunes on the laptop (current version 12.13.10.3) it will neither import nor play CDs correctly - it just skips through each track in a fraction of a second each and the entire disc in a couple of seconds. The imported tracks appear in iTunes but are only a few kB each (variable size up to about 256kB) and do not play.
This question has been raised before but seemingly closed with no resolution being offered on each occasion, other than to follow the trouble-shooting guide at Import songs from CDs into iTunes on PC – Apple Support (UK), i.e. check the CD itself or clean the laser etc., all to no avail.
The full diagnostics test state it reads a CD without issue.
Is there any fix for this issue? It is highly annoying that I have to fire up a very old desktop PC just to add music to my iPhone. I do not stream music at all.
