Apple Watch 9 Check In alarm triggers late without iPhone

I have a cellular Watch 9 that I run with. I have been using check-in when I run as I am often remote so my wife knows I am OK. My wife gets the started and check in notifications when I am done. But, if I don’t have my phone with me at time I end of my run (say i don’t have it in the car), a couple of hours later she will get an alarm that I am not checked in. It only seems to happen if my phone isn’t there when I finish.

The alarm is so inconvenient we can no longer use the feature. It doesn’t go well when it starts screaming at her at work.

It used to be fine when I first got it.

How to Fix or Prevent the Delayed Alarms

Force a Data Refresh: Before you drive away or walk past your car, open a network-heavy app (like Weather or Maps) on your watch to wake up the cellular radio and force the Check In end status to send.
Turn off Low Power Mode: Ensure Low Power Mode is disabled during your runs, as it completely turns off background cellular data when your iPhone isn't nearby.
End Check In Manually on-screen: Tap and confirm the Check In is fully closed out in your Messages app and wait for the "Check In complete" indicator before putting your wrist down.
Check Cellular Status: Verify that your carrier plan is fully active on the watch by checking the green cellular dots in the Control Center before heading out.
