My AirTag will not update
My AirTag only updates when it’s near me or my parents who share its location not when it’s around anyone else with an iPhone is that because I’m sharing the location with my parents

Location sharing does not affect AirTag range, nor affect location updates.
AirTag has no GPS positioning and no cellular communications, has a Bluetooth-based clear-air line-of-sight range of maybe 10 meters (gen1) or maybe 30 meters (gen2) (and range is likely less or much less in non-line-of-sight uses), and positioning updates propagate only via nearby Apple devices.
AirTags don’t work well as pet trackers, and don’t work in areas where there are no Apple devices within 10 meters or within 30 meters, when the AirTags or Apple devices are moving quickly, or in areas with Bluetooth interference or blockage. Location updates can variously be delayed by minutes or hours, too.
GPS trackers with cellular communications can provide more continuous tracking, and these are not dependent on positions and location relaying (only) via nearby Apple devices.
